Before dying in prison for supposedly poisoning her husband fifteen years ago, Caroline Crale wrote her daughter Carla that she was clearly innocent. Carla aided by Justin Fogg - who as a young solicitor fell in love with Caroline - persuades those present that fatal day to return to the scene when Aymas Crale is painting Elsa, his latest infatuation. There are: Philip and Meredith Blake; Elsa, now Lady Melksham; Angela Warren, Caroline's stepsister - a child then; and Angela's governess. Making up for a past injury she inflicted on Angela and caused Aymas' death - she shielded her, was tried and imprisoned. Justin proves beyond doubt that Caroline did not murder her husband but the guilty party is revealed.
